In mixed media abstract paintings I explore optical and tactile texture with the use of organic, expressive shapes. Although I intuitively choose some colors for each piece, other choices are more deliberate to give the paintings a vibrancy and energy. My art invites the viewer’s response and moves them towards discovery.
I paint with multiple layers using crushed stone, pumice and other textures which possess considerable presence. I am compelled to paint diptychs and triptychs that relate a sense of unity and congruency. Desire to paint arises from solitude and contemplation. Affinity and reverence for nature, as well as the peace and connection it fuels become the creative inspiration for my ideas.
I am influenced by the expressionist painters of the Der Blaue Reiter and the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism. I find inspiration from artistic approaches and philosophies of Jay DeFeo, Georgia O’Keefe, Brice Marden, and Franz Marc. Practicing consistent ritual in my life enhances receptivity for creative envisioning which shows itself on the canvas.
